R.E.A.L. Men Read MENtor Program

Success By 6, The Early Childhood Initiative of the United Way of Carlisle & Cumberland County, is pleased to announce the continuation of the R.E.A.L. Men Read MENTor program at the Carlisle Early Education Center for the 2020-2021 school year.

Real Men Read is a volunteer reader program that brings together MENtors from the Carlisle and Cumberland County area to read to preschool children for one hour each month. The acronym R.E.A.L. stands for Read, Excel, Achieve, Lead. Male mentors act as role models for children and demonstrate that men are strong readers and enjoy reading. Mentors encourage good reading habits for success in school. At the end of each read-aloud and discussion, the mentor provides each child with a new copy of the book to take home.

The REAL Men Read program seeks to:

  • encourage and foster early literacy skills in preschool children;
  • show that men value education;
  • instill a love of reading in children;
  • connect children with strong male role models;
  • develop book ownership in order to increase a child’s love of reading; and,
  • expand home libraries to encourage reading at home.
